I do agree that Drangleic is a long forgotten kingdom where everyone just goes hollow and forgets why they are there, which is basically exactly what happens to you near the end of the game. Despite thoroughly enjoying Ds2, I did find myself thinking "wait why am I here again" several times throughout the game.

One that was seemingly created from the actions of Dark Souls 1, but how did this world come to beDS3 ignores DS2 because it actually takes place before DS2. Here me out here. We learned in DS2 that both endings in DS1 were canon. If we light the bonfire we only extend the world for a short while (bout 1000 years).Tiresome, but not impossible

It's pretty much unfeasible to walk into Dark Souls as a first-time player and not get annoyed at some point.

Also, DS2 is more of a self-contained story. It was made by a different dev team and plays quite different from both DS1 and DS3. It has some rather weird gameplay mechanics that do not return in DS3. For this reason I'd suggest playing it only after DS1 and DS3.

There are other qualitites that are up in the air though. For instance, build variety was much better in DS2. A lot of people prefer lore from DS2 over DS3, etc….If anything, DSIII is much harder, at least in the back half. The first game front-loads its difficulty, peaking with Ornstein & Smough at approximately the halfway point, and from there it's all downhill- none of the bosses in its latter half are anywhere near as challenging, at least once you figure out their tricks.
